I never
wanted to be a belly dancer…acting was my dream. Dancing was always a joyous hobby
but I treated theatre and film with much more seriousness. My parents supported both. They
were generous and open-minded and encouraged my sister and I (Titanya; Boulder, CO) to
start studying Polynesian dance with Ginger Kehi Allen in San Diego, CA
when I was barely 5. |

Many
people ask Titanya and I where we got our names. They are our real names, confirming how
cool we think our parents are!
Titanya and I
booked our first big job together for a hotel in Rarotonga, Cook Islands when we were
teenagers (our dad chaperoned us). Because of our years in Polynesian dance we feel we had
a terrific foundation to merge into Arabic dance when we moved to Ashland, Oregon with our
mom. The small town seemed to bubble over with incredibly cultured Middle Eastern dance
teachers. |

We studied with Kristy
Gault who had been a member of Bal Anat with Jamilla Salimpour and Loucianne
Estes who also helped us gain insight into the more Turkish and folkloric aspects of
Middle Eastern dance.
